Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as "generic" residential metal roofing. As a result, there is no such things as "generic" installation instructions.
You can use this website to link to manufacturers' sites and you will find that some of them have posted instructions for installing their proprietary products.
Ultimately, the key is choosing a product and then obtaining instructions for it before proceeding.
