I am thinking about putting on a steel roof on my pole barn but I have some questions. 1) Do I have to strip the old shingle and boards or just strip the shingle and leave the boards or can I install the metal roof on top of the shingle. With ot without a gap? If so, how much of a gap?

Depends on the product. Most people use a vertical rib panel however if you lay it directly over the ashpahlt shingles it can telegraph through. If the shingles are in good shape then a layer of 30 lb felt will help separate them. Certainly strapping the roof is a plus provide you are using heavy enough steel to span.
