Chances are, when you remove the existing metal roof, you will tear up the old shakes enough that they will have to be removed. If they are on spaced sheathing, you will have to put down plywood before installing most "new" metal roofs including the slate profiles. Most metal roofs are easily walked with minimal care. If heavy foot traffic must take place, then things can be put on the roof to provide protection. Additionally, some of the slate profile metal shingles have optional foam backers for extra rigidity in high traffic areas. Todd Miller

Hi Dave, Your question was my question. Can you apply a metal roof over a cedar shake roof? When you said shake roof, did you mean cedar shake roof? Which design of metal roof would be best on a cottage on a Lake in Ontario? Thank you.

Hi Todd, Which roof design would you apply over a cedar shake roof on a Lake Simcoe, Ontario? We have a cedar hedge around our property. The house is two stories high and taller than the hedge with few major trees to deposit debris. The house is about 70 feet from the lake but is at least 30 feet higher than the lake. Thank you.

Most of the higher profile shake and tile look steel and aluminum roofs which can be found on this website can be installed over existing wood shakes. Todd Miller
