Can you tell me if metal roofs can withstand the salt air at beach locations? Do you need a special type of metal roof? We are planning to build a house in Rehoboth Beach, DE and would like a metal roof. Thank you.

There would be reason to look for a quality base metal and a quality coating for corrosion resistance. Metal roofing is in fact very popular in coastal locations. You may wish to ask if the product meets requirements of the MCA Premium Certified Roofing Program. You also may wish to consider a non-ferrous metal such as aluminum or copper. Todd Miller

I'm planning to build a home at the beach. What about SSM galvanized steel G90 with a baked on Kynar 500 coating? How well would that last when compared to an aluminum roof? How about SSM galvalume AZ 55 with or without a baked on Kynar 500 coating?

Both steels you describe are top of the line as far as steels for metal roofing. They are still steel though and it will be important that the metal be cut properly and that all scratches be touched up. Also check into warranty coverage from the manufacturer if you are in a coastal area. Todd Miller
