Hi We live in Northern Canada tempseratures vary from -40 F in the winter to + 90 F in the summer. Long long hours of sun light in the summer 22 hours Summer and 8 hours winter. Is metal roofing suitable for our climate ? and is it available froma Canadian outlet. Thank you in advance Sandy Banks. p.s. we are contemplating building a new house .

Thank you for your advice. I have been informed that although the metal sheeting itself is very suitable in this area, there have been problems with shrinkage and premature wearing of the rubberized washers which are the gaskets on the holding screws. This premature weathering and shrinking has caused seepage and leakage through the holes and has resulted in having to resecure the metal sheets after only a few years. Any comments ? Sandy Banks

There are many tpes of metal roofing. The type you are referring to is generically called "through-fastened" metal sheeting. It is the low end of metal roofing and, generally, the things you have pointed out may be its weak points. Most homeowners are choosing higher end metal roofing products -- products with concealed fasteners as well as built-in allowance for the metal's natural expansion and contraction. These products include standing seam as well as a variety of shake, shingle, and tile profile products. Todd Miller
