I am having a house built this spring and I have a question about using a metal roof. The house is a two story with a porch along the front of the house. I want to use a metal roof but the builder doesn't recommend it because he says the snow will fall off the upper roof and damage the porch roof. In your experience do you see this being an issue? I asked about using some sort of cleats on the roof but he didn't seem to have much faith in them, stating that they'd just break off in a couple of years anyway. Thank you very much for any help you may be able to give me.

There are many good snowguarding systems which can protect against damage by falling snow. Inquire with the roofing manufacturer as to what they suggest for their product. Additionally, if you choose a shingle or shake style metal roofing, some products have optional foam backers for extra rigidity that you may wish to use on the lower roof section. Todd Miller
