I am about to remodel a 1958 split-level ranch with a low sloping tar & gravel roof. Metal roofing appeals to me as a solution. Does the tar&gravel have to be excavated or could some type of underlayment be applied over the gravel? Thanks, Jimmy

It should be cleaned off fairly well. There are different "recovery boards" which perhaps could be placed over it then. You will have to choose a metal roof that is cuitable for your roof pitch.
