Does the rain make a loud noise when it hits metal roofs?

Not really. As long as you have an attic space and insulation, you should not notice any objectionable noise. Todd Miller

We are planning on building a post and beam style home with no attic. Would a metal roof make more noise than a 40-year shingle roof?

You will not have a "tinny" sound but, in this case, you may get a louder rumble. Todd Miller

I am considering purchasing a house with a metal-tile roof that looks like regular shingles. The house is open-beam, with no attic. Would your answer apply to this type of roof too? Thank you

If there is no sort of insulation or if there is insulation and it is solid-packed, then you may very well get some significant noise transfer into the home. The barrel tile profile is good though in that it is a pretty rigid panel without a lot of reverberation. Todd Miller
