I have a log house. The roof construction is 2x6 tounge and groove , 4" styrofoam, 3/4 plywood, felt, shingles, over 4x8 beams. I have had several opinions on re-roofing with metal. Do I need to strip the roof with 1x4 or 2x4 ? Or can I put a metal roof on top of the exsisting shingles ? jc

The building code calls for a 1" minimum vented air space in this type of roof asembly and tests have shown it can reduce heat transfer by over 30%. I would suggest strapping the roof vertically with 1 1/2" material fastened down into the structure and then select a metal roof designed to go on horizontal strapping. Check with the manufacturer and ask to see the products product approval report to see if and how it is approved for this type of construction.
