wood shakes

i presently have wood shake on my home. they are installed on 4 inch ix 4 sprips, would a metal roof attach to the 1x4 strips if the wood shakes were removed, also, would the type of metal roof which does not use metal screws work on the 1x4 strips, thanks

In most cases, you will find that metal roofs intended for residential use will require decking in an application such as this. Some of the stone-coated steel shakes could possibly be installed over what you have but you would have to check with the manufacturers. Also, yes, some standing seam panels can be installed this way but it will be important to have very good ventilation in the attic and avoid having any condensation occur on the back of the metal.
