Am planning new residence but am shocked at the cost of roof decking following the Gulf Coast events. Is decking required? Does vertical vs/ horizonal panels make a difference? Guess I am looking for an excuse to afford a metal vs/ traditional shingle roof? Is there an affordable way?

Most residential metal roofs do require decking. There are some products which probably are given the "green light" by their manufacturers to be installed without decking. However, several other things (which are good things even if decking is in place) must be followed very closely in order to make for successful installations without decking. Those include a vapor barrier behind the ceiling and very good ventilation across the bottom side of the roof deck. My suggestion would be to investigate products you like and then see what is required for proper installation -- decking, etc. Todd Miller
