I am installing a metal roof over existing shingles. My old shingles are in good shape but I live in an old house with an exposed living room ceiling in South Florida. I can see that my existing wood is fine in my living room and attic so I was going to leave the shingles on.
I am putting 1x3 inch battens down to affix the roof to and had planned to put RMAX 5 between the 1/3's for added r-5 factor. My living room ceiling is directly exposed to the sun. Local code(Palm Beach County)enforcement said that I could not use foam insulation on the roof. I talked to the manufacturer and they recommended using a foam metal insulation and to check with code again. They said it was better for roof support and insulation.
I am planning on doing the work this weekend and need supplies that are readily available. What insulation would you recommend? Thanks Pat

It sounds like you have a roofing manufacturer already selected. That is good. I really would not want to say anything to override their recommendations. So, I suggest trying to do whatever they suggest you do as far as insulation and perhaps ventilation. Have you discussed with them any opportunities for doing this in a way which allows for ventilation as well?

I personally, then, woudl suggest adding additional ventilation by putting down underlayment, followed by vertical strapping, followed by horizontal strapping that the roofing panels can be attached to.
You will end up with a resulting airspace which can be vented with soffit vents as intake and a roof ridge vent as exhaust, directly beneath the metal panels. This will help to avoid problems with condensation.
