Hi, I have an old building (rental apartment) with a metal roof which needs to be replaced. Currently, there is no sheathing or tar paper under the metal. It is nailed directly to the rafters. Underneath it is the attic space followed by a suspended ceiling. Can I just nail down new metal over the old? Do I have to install plywood or tar paper? Should I use some type of furring strips to separate the new from the old? Also, what I've seen alot of "blocks" that fit into the channels of wavey roofing. Are these necessary? If I have to make a space between the roofs, how to I cover it at the gabel end? Thanks, Michael

Wow. This is a pretty complex question ... I am not sure where to start. First of all, I am surprised that you have not had moisture and condensation issues in the past. You must have good attic ventilation? There is a product called roofhugger designed to help install one metal roof over another. Generally, with the exception of roofhugger, I would not suggest one metal roof over an old one. There are just too many potential issues with expansion and contraction, etc. Ultimately, though, you need to select the new metal roof you have and then pose this question to the manufacturer of it. As far as whether you need decking and underlayment ... it depends upon what metal roof you select. Many products do require decking especially for residential applications. You need to choose some products you like and then look into them in depth. Todd Miller
