I would like to have a standing seam metal roof put on but may have a venting problem. The "cape style" cottage is 20X24 with a loft. It does not have any venting. Soffit vents cannot be added easily due to the construction. The roof consists of T & G pine interior, A layer of fiberglass insulation and finally the the roof boards. The contractor suggested that he remove the old shingles and put down a vapor barrier, horizontal strapping, followed by vertical strapping, then the metal roof. The top of the roof would be left open under the ridge vent. A screen would be installed along the bottom. He called this a double roof. I'm worried about condensation from the Maine winters, as I hope to use the place year round. How does this sound? Should I add rigid insulation? I need alittle advice in laymen terms. Thanks

This sounds like a good plan. I assume that the vertical battens would go down first, and then the horizontal. You could add rigid insulation on top of the vapor barrier. You could also probably leave the old shingles in place. If you put down insulation, I would put underlayment on top of it before the battens. Todd Miller
