I'am looking at putting a metal roof on my house, its a ranch with three different additions added to it. This means I have multple valleys and ridges and three gable ends (4/12 pitch). I'am told that a steel G90 coated shingle will rust at all cut edges with-in 10 years (up to 1 inch from the end) and won't be covered under any warranty. second, I'am being told that a covered valley will cause problems with snow and ice when they melt, and can leak as a result. I live in michigan and get alot of snow on my roof 1-2 feet. Are these claims true. Do I need to go to a alum. roof shingle with an open valley like the roofing co. is telling me. thanks.

The best answer on the warranty is to get a copy of it and see whether it covers rust. There are ways to make cuts in panels which help to discourage rust. That is by cutting only with a shearing action. But still, ultimately, yes, that is the point for rust potential. I would ask to go see jobs which are 10 years old of the steel shingle. As for the valleys, I have experience with both open and closed. In my experience, closed valleys the like of what you're talking about almost always eventually clog up with something and either end up leaking or having ice and snow damage. Todd Miller
