We are building a house and plan to install a metal roof. Do you have any recommendations for a brand, style or coating that will work for rainwater catchment for drinking water and attaching solar panels? We would also like to find something that will blend in as well as possible with the woods and fields around our house.

Virtually all metal roofing and the coatings are inert and dissipate off the roof in such low numbers that the run off water is fine. You need to be most concerned over the ph level of the rain in the area you are in. Mounting solar panels is not that difficult on most metal roof systems and I would choose a roofing product style and then discuaa it with the solar people. For longevity of a metal roof system, investigate the metal substrate and make sure it is minimum G90 galvanized if painted and AZ~50 Galvalume for either exposed or painted. Then choose a PVDF, SMP or granular finish.

Actually, I have one more question now. My husband is concerned that if we use metal tiles or smaller sheets, such as the 48" x 16" Duraloc roof segments, that the places where the tiles or sheets overlap may trap organic material and get things growing that we don't want in our water. Do you have any insights into whether this is a problem? I prefer the look of some of the tile-type metal roofs, but health comes first.

You have more concern over tree sap, dirb excrement etc. If concerned then you should hose down the roof annually with a mild solution of soap and bleach to kill any growths off. I have had a house in the carribean for years and use only catchment water with no problems.
