First of all this is a superb web site, and your help is priceless. I bought a log home on the main river in town. The 20 yr. shingles will soon need replacing. I thought while doing that I'd go ahead and add a large room overlooking the river. The reason I tell you all this is to say that upstairs is very poorly vented. It will bake you in the summer. There is one electic fan vent, but is not very good. The HVAC is undersized. I am looking to properly vent a new metal roof layed over the existing roof which is very flat with no swag. Is furring strips the way to go after putting down on the shingles the best underlayment material. And finally, are ridge vents good with metal roofs. I need all the ventilation I can get. Mold around the river
is a problem too.

Bill, can you tell me more about what you currently have for ventilation and construction? No reason to re-invent the wheel if you have something that can be improved.
But, yes, you could install some metal products over battens over your current roof and then vent it with an eave vent detail as intake and a ridge vent as exhaust.
I would suggest underlayment over the current shingles, vertical battens and then either horizontal battens or solid decking (not all metal roofing can be installed on battens) followed by the roofing. The underlayment would be on top of the new decking if decking is required.
