I recently had a new metal roof put on with the screws in the flat areas. My neighbor saw it and said that the screws should have been put in pre-drilled holes in the tops of the ridges because it has been discovered that the flat area installation will leak within 3 years. My screws do have the cap and rubber type washer. What are your experiences. Thanks.

First and foremost, I would contact the manufacturer of the roofing if I were you. However, in my experience, the biggest "no-no" in this area would be to install the screws down in the small, pointed "valley" between two V-Ribs. Installing them in the larger "flat" areas of the panel profile is considered acceptable by many in the industry.

Sorry but most manufactures recommend placing screwa in valleys. If you use nails place them on ridge.
