Is it possible and/or worthwhile to install a metal roof over an standard roof to act as a natural chimeny to minimize solar absorption?

I am not understanding your "natural chimney" reference. However, many residential metal roofs are ideal for installation over existing shingles. Additionally, many metal roofs are using special reflective colors for energy efficiency and, particularly with the shake and shingle profile products, there is an integral airspace which enhances energy efficiency. Individual manufacturers can discuss the efficiency of their products.

Todd ... Thanks for taking a shot at my poor description. What I have in mind is a metal roof installed over a tar roof with an airspace of 1 or 2 inches between them to provide a natural chimney to reduce the heat absorption in a house. Does that make more sense?

A vented space like that will be very beneficial. You will need to ahve it connected to soffit vents as intake and then have a ridge vent for exhaust. This would require vertical purlins over the existing roof followed by either horizontal purlins or solid decking and underlayment and then roofing. The choice between horizontal purlins or solid decking would be determined by the requiremenst of the metal roofing product you choose.

Todd, Thanks for your help. It just seemed like such a logical benefit I couldn't figure out why the metal roofing industry doesn't offer it as a standard product.

There are different ways to make a metal roof be as "cool" as possible. Different metal products, though, have different attributes and features. I believe that individual manufacturers do / should promote how to make their systems as energy efficient as possible.
