Hello, our "new to us" cottage has a 1 and 1/2 in 12 slope roof, not insulated, currently covered in aluminum roofing. There is evidence of water daming damage etc... on the ceilings. We have various quotes, one contractor suggesting a "sandwich roof" where in foam insulation is laid in between new strapping, and the metal installed over that. There is no provision for ventillation; they say you either ventillate or do not ventillate. All of the info on your site recommends ventillation; are there circumstances where this is not required? Many thanks

First of all, most residential metal roofing systems are not designed for that low pitch. It will be critical to start by finding an appropriate product and then seeing what type of system will be needed to support it. Condensation occurs when warm moist air hits a cool surface. You can avoid this situation by venting out the warm moist air or potentially by having a complete vapor barrier below the insulation, isolating off the roof assembly from all warm moist air. I hope this helps. All Best. Todd Miller
