Most manufacturers of quality metal roof systems designed for residential application will have detailed installation instructions specifying exactly how their products have been designed and tested to perform.

Hi
I am a do-it-yourselfer, considering a metal roof over shingles. No current leaks but do see some sags. Understand untreated 1x4 horizontal and vertical. Is there a reference book that will give me instructions on installation. Thanks Doug

I am not aware of any publically available reference book for metal roofing installation. The reason is that there are such differences between all of the different profiles and products which are produced. Metal roofing is not a "generic" sort of thing.
There are some industry publications on metal roofing including one put out by NRCA (National Roofing Contractors Association) but frankly those are very "watered down" in an attempt to be generic.
The best thing is to choose a product and then obtain full instructions from the manufacturer. There should not be any problem in obtaining those before you purchase the roofing.
Do not jump to the conclusion that you will need vertical and horizontal battens. There are many residential metal roofs designed and intended for installation direct to solid decking and underlayment.
