Just bought an acreage and an older model mobile home came with the property.....the trailer has obvious water damage inside and the culprit is undoubtedly the old flat roof..........can i replace the current roof with a metal roof system...is this a job my hubby and i can DIY....do we have to turn the flat roof into a pitched roof before we can do it?? I know...too many questions......... Hope to be dry in Saskatchewan!

Not too many questions ... thanks for contacting us. Most residential metal roof systems require at least a 3:12 roof pitch which would mean building up the pitch on your roof. The low weight of metal, in comparison to standard shingles, will be a big help with that. However, just the same, you may need to have some structural analysis done to see whether the home can handle the weight of putting a steeper structure on top of it and, if so, how to best support / anchor it. Some of the residential systems are available DIY. You can use this website to find products you like and then contact their manufacturers regarding distribution channels. There are some commercial metal roof systems which can be used at much lower roof pitches -- as low as 1/4:12 in fact. These systems require specialized tools though and would be hard to DIY.
