I was wondering, can you install a metal roof over exising shingles? If so, this would make my like a lot easier.

Metal roofing weighs much less than standard shingles. Most residential metal roof systems are designed to be installed over existing shingles, saving the cost and mess of old roof removal and disposal. I always suggest a new underlayment between the two layers of roofing though. Todd Miller

What if the metal is 24 guage and the old composite is in 2 layers? I have been advised that the composite should be removed due to its weight, but a respected roofer says the composite will not have to be removed. The home is a sturdy, brick structure over 30 years old.

In most areas, building codes prohibit more than two layers. From a practical standpoint, though, there are always possible conditions which could prevent this but, generally, your installation as described is probably feasible. Check with the manufacturer of the new roofing and see what they say since they will know their product better than I do. Todd Miller

Can you apply metal roofing over existing metal roofing? Existing sheathing is skipped 1 X 6.
