We recently had a stone coated metal roof installed over our existing shake roof. The day the crew started I noticed that they weren't putting any underlayment on. Questioned the company about this and they said that it was not delivered with other materials but that they would bring it out and instll it. To my suprise they installed it on top of the horizontal battens and assured me this was an acceptable practice. Could you please inform me as to the proper procedure for this type installation.

This is not all that unusual, I do not think, especially if there are no vertical battens put down before the horizontal ones. However, to be sure, call the manufacturer of your roofing and check with them. Todd Miller

Hey Todd, Thanks for the help. They already had the vertical & horizontal battens and a third of the roof installed when we noticed that there wasn't any underlayment. The underlayment is a fire resistant felt. So should it not be tight against the existing roof or does it not make a differance. Our understanding from talking with other roofing companies is that the underlayment goes on first, then the vertical & horizontal battens, then the roof panels.

Given everything you have said now, I have a hunch the felt should be down first. It may depend partly on whether there is a fire rating which needs to be met in your area. If thee isn't, then having it on top of the battens may not be all bad. That is done on a regular basis in Europe, by the way. Please, though, call the manufacturer and see what they say. I am certain they will be able to help you. Todd Miller
