Which would be better for new roof on exsisting home, alu. or steel. Also, I must add, that after reading some post about repainting and such, I am questioning if metal is the way to go anyway, why pay more for a 50 year or better warranty, and then maybe down the road have to paint the roof. For our home and detached garage/workshop, I'm talking about a lot of roof. I need some opinions.

My house is 60 yrs old. I don,t know how much longer I,ll live here but I would like to take advantage of the better cooling I will get. Also ,I am considering a white roof. Will it stain from tree sap and will it have tobe painted?

Many manufacturers produce both aluminum and steel roofing. Each metal is good and has particular attributes which may make it preferable for certain applications or certain roofing profiles. The various manufacturers will gladly discuss the metals they use and why they use them.
Today's metal roofs are available with many very long-term quality coatings that carry substantial warranties for fade and chalk as well as for general adhesion. There are several types of paint coatings as well as aggregate coatings available. When investigating metal roofs, be sure to inquire as to the warranty's coverage for the product's coating.

Today's metal roofs often feature built-in airspaces and other benefits which make them energy efficient. Energy efficiency is not achieved strictly through the use of light colors and reflectivity. Additionally, some manufacturers now offer special coatings which are reflective of UV even in dark colors.
Tree sap that lands on a roof will hold dirt and, perhaps over time, support fungus growth as well. This could become visibly apparent on a white roof and would perhaps need to be power-washed or cleaned otherwise periodically.
