We are going to put a metal roof on our existing shingle roof? All of the bidders have suggested using 1x4s. But they have different ideas on ventilation and insulation. We want to take the whirly birds off and use another type of ventilation. The manufacturer of the metal, suggests using profile vent, but the contractors say the ridge cap itself is enough ventilation. What are your thoughts? Also, the manufacturer has a bubble insulation with foil and white facing reflective. The contractors say they usually do not use insulation. I want to do the right thing and not make a mistake. Who should I believe? Your thoughts are very appreciated.

A standard ridge cap, if being made and installed correctly, will not allow ventilation. Products like ProfileVent allow airflow but also keep out insects, rain, snow, etc. Insulations and various reflective barriers can help with energy efficiency of the roof system. Please check with the manufacturer of the roofing itself (call them) and make sure that the installation procedures being followed by your installers are their recommended procedures for residential applications. Please also go see past jobs done by your contractor, talk to the homeowners, etc. Todd Miller
