I want to replace my old asphalt shingle roof with metal. I would feel better if the old shingles were removed so that any rotted plywood, if any, could be replaced before installing the metal roof.
Approximately how much, percentage-wise, would removing the old shingles add to the total price?

This will depend on what part of the country that you live. Removing an asphalt roof not only entails removing the old asphalt material, but also hauling and waste disposal. In some parts of the country, disposing of asphalt shingles carries an added cost at the land fill. It would be best to obtain estimates for the removal from your roofing contractor. He may also be able to inspect your roof and perhaps be able to determine if the roof is sound without removing the old shingles.
