i live in texas, where we get some hail and rain. could you tell me how a metal roof (the silver vertical panel kind, i guess tin or aluminum) would hold up to hail? how about rust? i seem to remember seeing some homes with rusty roof problems. also, is it at all possible to get a very vague ballpark estimate on a roof of this kind for the 1412 square foot home in this pic? thank you.

Hi Alison, Thanks for your question. There is a very large variety of metal roof systems available. These products achieve different looks and have different attributes such as fastening methods, coatings, and life expectancy. There are also, as you are aware, different metals, including different grades and types of steel and then non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, zinc and copper. Overall durability is based upon all of these factors so there is no "easy" answer to your question. Obviously, with non-ferrous metals, there is never a rust risk. As far as hail, many metal roofing products are approved under the UL 2218 Impact Resistance Test and, in many cases, homeowners who choose these products are eligible for insurance discounts. If you email direct to me at [email protected] and provideme with your email address, I can provide you some more detailed reading material and additional information to help you understand what options are available, and the differences between them.
