A new trend in the housing industry is the monolithic dome (see attachment). The company which developed this process has yet to solve the need for good roofing.
Can a metal shingle be developed which will be universally attachable to these elliptical and irregular buildings?

John ... anything can probably be done for a price but I must say this will present a real challenge. The rounded surfaces are challenging, the low roof pitch on the top is challenging, fastening could be challenging, and the fact that I assume these are not all the same size would be challenging.
My only advice is to use this website to individually contact the manufacturers of shingle, shake and slate profile products to see if any of them would be interested in joining up with you on this in some fashion.

I think that, ultimately, individual manufacturers may have engineers and technicians who can help guide you through this.
I have to tell you, though, other than custom-fabricated sheet metal, I do not have a lot of hope for putting metal on these structures. Custom sheet metal work can be done to cover about anything.

Todd,
I talked to the company that sold me the building yesterday. They are working on a lot of ideas (standing seam, ceramic tile, elastomeric type paints), but as of yet, I don't think they have the answer. I'll post anything they come up with.
I had envisioned a small interlocking metal shingle which spiraled down the building, kind of like a knights mail suit.
Thanks for your interest,
John

I finally came up with a metal shingled roof that works on the monolithic dome. I looks excellent as well. Maybe I'll patent the idea, I doubt anything like it exists to date.
Been a long time coming!!

Can't believe your still there!! Don't know what I'm going to do. Talked to a patent attorney, fairly expensive. I'd want to be sure of my idea before I went that route, although I believe it to be the best idea to date for these structures.
What do you suggest?

Have you ever moved a new product onto the market? We might talk, this is a niche market, do you have any knowledge of the dome industry and there roofing issues?
