I see the term "strapping" used a lot here, especially when the question comes up about covering an old compostion or other roofing with a new metal one. Does this mean a 1x4 board for example, or a steel "hat channel" that sits up an inch or so or I've seen 2x2's used to create a batten system. But not sure what strapping means exactly. Thanks in advance

Strapping is a fairly loose and generic term used to refer to the types of things you've mentioned -- battens or lathe or purlin put in place to which roofing is later secured. A great deal of confusion surrounds this subject within the industry. Requirements are different for different products and different types of applications. My number one advice is always the same -- make sure that the product is being installed in accordance with how its manufacturer has tested it and how its manufacturer wants it to be installed on your type of application. Feel free to check back here for confirmation once you have the recommendation from the manufacturer. Todd Miller
