I have been living in a partly renovated barn for many years, with a cathedral wallboard ceiling and fiberglass insulation between ceiling and plywood roof decking. Soffit vents and ridge vent were installed despite not having propervents, and were reinstalled when I put on the standing seam metal roof two years ago. The metal roof is mounted on horizontal purlins (probably 2x4s) and solid insulation between the purlins with Grace water and ice shield on the roof decking. The rafters are only 2x6.
The moisture problem in the ceiling was noticed in the area of incompleted new construction (a kitchen and entryway addition). I had put up fiberglass insulation but did not finish the vapour barrier or the ceiling beadboard, when I noticed frost collecting on screws that came through the decking that were in contact with the metal roof. Of course this was causing moisture problems, and I became concerned that this problem also existed in the original barn ceiling though I could not detect it.
I cannot complete the new contruction until a decision is made on how to correctly handle the roof ventilation, and I have been advised about two different solutions, the "hot" or solid roof or a vented cold roof solution. There are elements of both existing and could go either way in theory. However, I am hoping not to have to remove the whole interior ceiling, due to expense and the hastle of moving out.
I have been told I could close off the ridge vent and soffit vents and create a solid roof, except that the insulation under the roof decking is fiberglass, not high-density foam; and the wallboard ceiling still needs a vapour barrier of some sort.
To vent the ceilig with a 1" air channel, I would need to remove the whole ceiling and insulation and start over, or find a way to create the air channel above the insulation somhow, to use the existing vent system. The new addition could be tied in to either solution.
I would be gratful to know what you think the viable alternatives are. Thank you.
