what is the preferred method for bathroom exhaust vents? I'm installing a 5v metal roof over shingles. The roof supplier has the rubber roof jacks for pvc sewer vents but nothing for the rectangular based damper style bathroom vent now on the shingled roof. Local hardware stores cary them with steel, plastic or aluminum bases. The aluminum base model is quite flexible. Would this work over the small ribs that are between the main ribs on the metal roof?

First we recommend contacting the manufacturer of the roofing as the geographic location has a bearing along with the building code requirements and then ask to see the product approval report which will state that it has been reviewed to the building code and how to install it especially with regards to ventilation and wind uplift. Having said that you should be laying the roof sheets out so that there is not a side lap in the sheets where the bath exhaust hood is located. Then you should use a lower and upper sheet. Install the lowere sheet such that it goes to the top of the exhaust pipe, allowing for movement around the pipe when you cut the hole. Then install the new hood. The Aluminum will mold the best to the profile however you can use a metal one ald flod the profiles flat under the flashing with a block of wood. Install the hood setting it in a bed of butyl over the metal. Then install the upper sheet whith the lower edge down to the lower edge of the pipe and set it in a bed of butyl as well leaving ample roof when you cut the opening for the water to flow around the hood.
