There are a number of things to look to. Firsts check the building code requirements in your area and if they allow overlays and over how many layers, then check with the manufacturer of the metal roof system. They should have a product approval report issued by ICC that shows it has been tested and reviewed to tyhe building code and will indicate how it is to be installed. We have products as example that are tested and designed to go over existing wood and asphaly shingles and carry vasrious product approval reports. Some require strapping and some do not but there are certain fire, wind and fastening issues that each system addresses. Take your time and investigate thouroughly.
