I DIDN'T SEE AN ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION ANYWHERE. I'M HAVING A METAL ROOF PUT ON BUT AM TRYING TO FIND OUT IF I NEED TO TEAR OFF THE OLD SHINGLES FIRST. 2 LAYERS IN SOME AREAS, 3 IN OTHERS.

The building codes enforced in most areas call for a maximum of two layers of roofing. However, from a practical standpoint, many metal roofs are low weight enough and designed in ways which would allow installation over multiple layers. Here's my plan of action for you: 1) Check into building code requirements in your area, if any. 2) Use this website and find a couple of products and manufacturers you like. Work with the manufacturers to determine the suitability for their products to go over multiple layers. They will likely ask for photos and more info on you roof. 3) If you choose a product whoch could go over your existing but it is against building codes, see if the manufacturer can work with the building inspector to get a waiver of the two roof maximum requirement.
