metal roof over cedar shingles

I want to take off my slate shingles and install my metal roof over the top of the original cedar shingles that are under the slate shingles. The cedar shingles were nailed to 1x4 strips that are nailed to the trusses. I was going to screw down the metal roof into the 1x4s. Will this be ok, and what insulation do I need to use between the cedar shingles and metal roof?

Thanks for your question but I cannot in good conscience answer it as the answer depends upon what type of metal roof you choose. Some metal roofs, especially the thicker tile and shake profiles, can be installed over wood shingles and shakes. Underlayment would be installed but probably no insulation. Other systems can be installed over insulation boards. Another factor is the condition of the wood shingles. They may be pretty broken up after the slate is removed. You really need to choose some metal products you like and then contact their manufacturers with specific questions about your application. Todd Miller

I have a cedar wood shake roof that is 20 years old and I need to replace it. I am considering a Country Manor Shake Aluminum roof from Classic Roofing. If I have an underlayment, can I safely put the metal roof over the wood shakes, or would you suggest taking the shakes off and putting down plywood first?

The Country Manor Shake product has been installed over shakes before but a lot depends upon the thickness and condition of the shakes, as well as the spacing of boards beneath them. Talk to the contractor baout these things and his / her experiences. Contact the manufacturer (www.classicroof.com) direct if you have questions ... or email me at [email protected] (Yeah, I work at Classic.) Todd Miller
