What is the industry standard for what type of metal roof panel can be called a standing seam roof? Does a standing seam roof always get fassened with clips?

That is a good point, Jason and I really don't know. Generally, there is a distinction made between "through-fastened" panels and standing seam. Through-fastened panels come in wide sheets and have exposed fasteners. Standing seam panels have raised seams (rather than just overlaps) and concealed fasteners. Most standing seams do have clips for fastening. There are a few systems with slotted fastening hems which I believe are still called standing seam. I hope this helps.
