We are an association of manufactures and yes most of our mebers systems have ben tested and approved to install without removing the existing roof material. The building code allows this over one layer of shingles. Each system and manufacturer has their requirements. Choose a product and contact the manufacturer.

This depends entirely upon the particular metal system, how it has been designed, and how it has been tested. This question must be answered by the manufacturer of the roofing. Todd Miller

Question: Have a 40 year old metals shed that needs a new roof (roof leaks and appears to be unfixable. Is it possible to strip and applly new roof, is it a problem with condensation, how about weight? The only advice I have been able to get locally is "Light a match to it and hire us to build a new shed" The genuis who made that remark couldn't tell me how the tons of cement and steel would burn.

Hi. Thanks for your contact. Obviously, I do not know as much about the building as does your "light a match" guy but I would not see why the roof could not be replaced with something similar and provide another 40 years or more. There may be ways to change the construction of the building which might get extra life out of the roof. If you wish, email me pictures of the roof and roof structure, outside and, if possible, inside, and I will try to provide additional input. My email is [email protected] Todd Miller

I live in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, and have been asked to price doing a steep (10/12 pitch) roof, in metal. I have seen instructional videos on the sequence of how to install these roof systems, but have never done them. What I don't understand, from and installation point of view, is how they are installed on a steep roof, if I cannot use roof jacks and planks, as I would when shingling, and if it is done with safety harnesses and ropes etc., how do I get off the roof once I cap it because my harness and rope would be secured at the ridge which is fine until I cap the roof. See what I mean? Do you have a supplier near to me? ( I am an hour west of Toronto, along highway 401)? Thanks, Steve

You would have to check with our manufacturer listing for local suppliers. Hanging ladders off of the ridge and using ladder jacks can work very well. Exact method for roof access will vary a bit based upon what type of product is being installed. Check with the manufacturer once you choose a product. Todd Miller

Bill, There are companies that make a steel purlin with cut out places to match some metal roof profiles (vertical panels). You can't just put metal over metal without something in between to elevate one metal panel or shingle over the existing roof. Why would you want to anyway?

I agree with Wade's comment generally. I have seen a few instances, with special steps taken, of metal installation over metal flat seam panels or shingles. I am not a real fan of such things and generally advise against it but I have seen it done successfully a couple of times. Todd Miller

Thanks to the idea Hombre.. Could you suggest me someone or something that will help me about roofing estimates for my roofing replacement? I gathered some details at http://www.viddler.com/explore/pflugervillehow/videos/1/ before. But I'll consider second opinions.. Thanks in advance :)
