when installing a 13" unvented ridge cap on my classic 5-rib paneled roof I started at one end of cap and alternately screwed into the ribs on each side. As I neared the other end I found the cap had moved off center and the profile had flattened out.
What did I do wrong? Is there a better screw sequence?

Basically you streched the metal. You sould first chaulk a straight line on each side. Then fasten each piece at each end on each side first and when you have the ridge in place check it for straight and level, adjust accordingly and then go back and screw it in the middle each side.

Try a product called Versa Vent which is needle faced foam that will fit over most profiles ensuring a good weather and bug seal. Then install a standard ridge trim over. If you have an existing ridge vent, there are looose woven fiberglass product that can be retrofit into them as well.
