We just had our roof done this summer....really happy with the results but have some slight odor now occuring. The guys cut off the bathroom vent pipes flush with the roof so there are no pipes visible up thru the metal..is this normal installation? Does not appear to be leaking....Is there enough ventilation for the toilet? Thanks

This is not correct and depending on the type of system you had installed it will be ventilating under the roof covering. This will bring in warm moist air and be an ideal host for mould to get a foothold. I would recommend getting your ontractor back out there to correct the situation. There is a flexible rubber boot flashing designed to be retrofitted over the metal so it should be easy to complete once they locate the pipe.

You will need to find an experienced metal roofing contractor to bring the pipes through the roof. I am sorry about your bad experience. Todd Miller

when you say bring pipes through roof do that mean you have to take up the metal to find it and is the pipes real big.also they cut all of my other vents down to do i need the other vents they cut off.

Edwina, I am sorry but I really cannot answer these questions "long distance". Chances are you do need the vents that were cut through so they will have to be extended up through the roof and flashed appropriately. You will need to find an experienced metal roofing contractor, perhaps through the list on this website or perhaps by contacting the manufacturer of your roofing. Todd Miller

I was also wondering if it is acceptable to tie all the bathroom vents into one larger header in the attic and thus avoid all the roof penatrations. My present contractor recomended just cutting off all the smaller bathroom vents and let them vent under the new metal roof. I really don't like that idea, but I would like to keep the number of possible leaks to a minimin. I have not had the new roof installed yet. I presently have a single roof. It is not in bad shape, do I need to remove it before installing a metal roof? Thanks for your help

The International Building Code, I believe, requires these to be individually vented. There is a system from Europe available which joins them but I do not think that it is acceptable under US code. I would check with the building inspector in your area. In any event, do not just cut these off and vent them into the attic. Todd Miller

Thank you for the quick response! There are a lot of roofing contractors setting up shop in south MS. I did notice after hurricane Katrina almost all of the metal roofs were still intact. This fact is what has lead me to consider installing a metal roof. Thanks for keeping up this important web site!

You're welcome. Thank you for doing good research. There are so many types of metal roofs available. Finding the right one for your home is critical. Finding a quality installation contractor is critical too. Todd Miller
