We are currently building a home in a snow belt area, I have requested skylights in 2 different locations, my husband has concerns of snow, or ice gathering around the skylights and not sliding with the rest of it, therefore creating problems. Do you have any input or suggestions that would ease his mind, yet allow me to be a happy homeowner? Thanks in advance for your response. Kim

First of all, speaking from personal experience, do you realize how very noisy skylights are when it rains? Other than that, quality metal roof systems will include instructions on flashing skylights? Are they tricky? Yes. Impossible? No. You need a raised skylight -- something up on a curb rather than flush to the roof. You also need instructions from the roofing manufacturer and a competent installer who knows and cares about what they are doing. he excat flashing method depends upon the exact profile of metal roofing which you choose. I hope that this helps.

why is it that skylights must be curb mounted, and not flush? Is that ony a requirement for metal roofs? Can traditional shingled roofs have flush mounted skylights?

It is a requirement on metal to allow for the dimensioned profiling of the metal panels. Flush mounted skylights can be used on standard shingle roofs. Todd Miller
