I am building a log cabin 24x32 feet with a 8 ft rise and a 12 ft run roof. I want to use a metal roof; most are guaranteed 25 or 30 years. What typically fails first in a well installed metal roof? How is the paint or color installed, and what drives the price of a metal roof?

There are, to my way of thinking, four prime issues involved in getting a good metal roof. They are: 1) Product Design 2) Base Metal 3) Coating 4) Installation Product design can be determined by knowing the pitch and configuration of your roof and then confirming with the roofing manufacturer that their product will work on your roof. Base Metal and Coating are both covered under the Metal Cosntruction Association Certified Metal Roofing Panel program. I would suggest looking for products which meet the criteria of this program. As is the case with most things, you get what you pay for. Proper installation is up to your contractor. Go look at pasrt jobs they have done and talk to past customers.
