After the shingles have been removed and a water inhibiting material is applied to the plywood roofing, do I still need to apply strapping or furring strips to the roof before the metal is applied to provide ventilation or can the metal be applied directly the the roofing surface?

Some metal roof systems require strapping while others require a solid decking. A number of the vertical rib systems can mount either way however it may be limited by the material thickness. Some prefer the straping when installing these systems as it does not let irregularities in the solid sheathing to telegraph up through especially during installation. Best bet is to always as the manufacturer or their distributor.
