how to compute the adequacy of a roof slope

Metal roofing manufacturers will be able to tell you the minimum slope required for their various products. In most cases, they will give you a number in relation to 12, such as 3:12. Roof slope is measured as rise over run, in relationship to a 12' run. For example, 3:12 refers to a roof which raises vertically 3' for every 12' it goes back horizontally.

TODD-- Read you 11/6 reply to "roof slope". I have a difficult room to figure out. It is 24' x 26', with 18' vaulted ceiling. The south half of the 26' has a different slope than the north half, and it has a 4' outside overhang, whereas the north side has a 2' overhang. How do i figure this?

Somewhere along the line, you have to have a physical measurement. You must either physically measure the vertical rise and horizontal run of each roof slope or you can put a level on the roof to determine the roof pitch. Once you know the roof pitch, you can use the rule of a right angle to determine the rafter length.
