Am seriously considering 5 v roof by semco. The roof is 17 year old 3 dimentional with half inch plywood decking. I plan on going over the 3 d with either 2x4 or 1x4 12" on center (i live on the barrier island in fla) and applying a closed cell insulation board inbetween. The roof is in good shape and I dont want to strip it down because I am doing this by myself and need the protection of an existing roof while I plod along. I think i got the wrong info at the building dept. They told me the 5 v has to be screwed into the rafters. My three questions are: 1) Does this sound like a good overall plan 2) am i correct in using a closed cell insulation board? I was told to do so by a roofing contractor who was unalbe to tell me what it is. 3) I have been unable to find the building codes for florida on line or anywhere else. The building dept. says they dont have that material available. Are they full of bull and where do I get it? thanks rich

First of all, 5V cannot be screwed only into rafters. All of your other questions, however, will vary based upon the exact product you are considering as well as the testing and specifications put forth by the manufacturer. I am really sorry but for me to try to answer your questions would be potentially misleading. You really need to go to the roofing manufacturer for answers. Just give them a call and I am sure they will help. While you are at it, encourage SEMCO to become a member of the Metal Roofing Alliance. They are not currently a member.
