I have two different roof pitches on our house. The patio roofs are very low pitch while the main house roof is 4/12. How do you join these two roofs for a weathertight seal, particularly melting and freezing snow creating ice dams on the low pitch patio roof backing up under the main roof? Please explain in detail. Thanks

First of all, if your intention is to use the same metal products on both pitches, it is critical that you choose a metal roof which can be used on both pitches. Many residential metal roofs should not be used on roof pitches of less than 3:12. I have seen some jobs where one style of metal roofing was used on the higher pitch and another on the low pitch. Regardless, a pitch transition flashing must be in place. First of all, you will want an appropriate underlayment put on the roof. Next, the lower pitch roof should be installed. The pitch flashing will come out on top of the lower pitch and run up under the steeper pitch. One real critical thing is that this flashing be mounted high enough on the upper pitch that it maintains a positive slope when it comes out on top of the lower pitch. I want to stress that any quality manufacturer of residential metal roofing will help with the design and fabrication of this flashing.
