Am building a garage.Want to put a galvalume metal roof on. Have contacted a number of contractors about this. Some say have to put plywood on as an underlayment, others say just purlins and nothing else. I live in the northeast. Who is right?

First you must choose a product and contact the manufacturer to ensure it can go over purlins. Then you must make sure that the roof system is braced properly if you are not using plywood.
Also you must use an underlayment for condensation control. Given that you are in the NE and you will be parking your car in there, you will generate a lot of condensation.
Last contact the local building department to ensure you comply to the local code.
