Can metal roof be installed over 100 year old slate roof? High adhesive instead of screws? thanks....also after reading 8/18 about quality of installation that is way too much knowledge for the average consumer to have in making a decision to go or no/go with metal...you have to put your confidence in a company that will stand by their product and INSTALLATION.

Some metal systems can be installed over slate typically on a gridwork that is fastened down into the structure however their are a few considerations. 1) It is difficult to locate the structure components. 2) You are adding more weight onto an older building so make sure it can take the weight. 3) Generally there is enough salvage value in slate to pay for the removal. 4) Slate roofs were deigned to breathe so make sure your new roof has adequate ventilation. 5) Check with your local building department to ensure that they will allow the roof over. As to checking out a contractor, this function goes with any project and or roofing material. Here you are making a long term capital investment in your home. Select a product that you feel is best and then a contractor and ask for referances on the contractor on similar insrtallations and check them out.
