I have had several contractors give me estimates on installation of metal roofing on my house. I live 40 miles northeast of Chattanooga, TN. Two contractors want to install the metal directly on top of the shingles (one with felt, the other no felt) and two contractors insist that the metal be installed with purlins (one with felt, the other no felt). Gentlmen, who is correct? All of the contractors say that the manufacturer says that their way is correct. Please email your answer ASAP. Surely there is a correct method in this madness that is not so confusing.

It truly does depend upon how the manufacturer has designed and tested the product. Generally, for residnetial installations, direct to deck (over old shingles with underlayment and slip sheet in between) is becoming very common.
However, find out who manufactures the roofing and call them. They should be able to tell you what is right for their product.
