The latest roofing developments in the desert southwest include the "unvented attic", where there is no venting of the attic and insulation is attached to the underside of the roof instead of laid on the ceiling. This results in a semi-conditioned attic space. Studies show that this results in lower heating and cooling costs in hot dry climates. Would a metal roof work with this system?

This sort of thing can be best done with new construction rather than on an existing house.
Metal roofing will work with this sort of application -- no problem.
In fact, generally, I think that asphalt shingle manufacturers do not see this as a good application for their products.
