I'm very hesitant to install a metal roof over badly deteriorated asphalt that has begun to curl. My concern is that the strapping won't adhere to the roof evenly. Is there a point when installing over asphalt should be ruled out. Thanks. Dave

Well, Dave, how about a bigger surprise -- many metal roofs that are put over old shingles go directly over them -- no strapping. Not all types of metal roofs can be put on strapping. Additionally, even some that can be installed that way are not always suggested to be installed that way by their manufacturers. #1 rule -- know the installation requirements put forth by the manufacturer of your roofing and work within those parameters. Generally, strapping will even out the deck quite well. Also, the roofs that go right over the old shingles always have underlayment put down first on top of the old shingles. These products also tend to be the shingle and shake look products (and tile) which, by their very design, are pretty forgiving when installed over an uneven surface. I hope this helps.
